Limits & structure
The headline limit does not tell the whole story.
A complete comparison looks at aggregates, defense, retentions, batch language and excess follow-form provisions.
Per occurrence and aggregate
The occurrence limit caps covered amounts arising from one occurrence as defined. The products-completed operations aggregate can cap all covered product claims during the policy period.
Defense inside or outside
Defense outside limits preserves the liability limit for damages. Some specialized forms include defense within the limit, which can materially reduce available protection.
Deductible or retention
Determine whether the insured must pay damages only or damages plus defense, whether the carrier controls defense from dollar one and whether collateral is required.
Umbrella and excess
Confirm that excess coverage follows the underlying products exposure, territory and endorsements. An umbrella may contain its own exclusions even when the underlying policy responds.
